Chicago, IL – On Monday, Democrat Eileen O’Neill Burke submitted more than 13,000 petition signatures – nearly three times the amount required – to appear on the ballot as a candidate for Cook County State’s Attorney in the March 2024 Primary Election.
“I’m thrilled to be kicking off this effort to bring safety and justice back to Cook County surrounded by friends, supporters, and the working men and women of organized labor,” said Justice Eileen O’Neill Burke, a former prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, and judge. “The status quo isn’t working for anyone. We need to tackle gun violence while getting after the root causes of crime, like poverty and historic disinvestment. For more than thirty years, I’ve worked in all corners of the justice system, and I’m eager to put that experience to work so every community can thrive.”
O’Neill Burke’s campaign recently released the first poll of the race showing Justice O’Neill Burke with a double-digit lead while her opponent’s record as a top corporate lobbyist who actively campaigned against fair wages for workers and their right to form a union has drawn serious concern. The poll memo is available here.
As the daughter of a deceased labor leader, O’Neill Burke is a steadfast support of union rights, O’Neill Burke has garnered wide support from across Cook County and organized labor including:
- Painters District Council 14 (representing 13 local Chicagoland unions)
- Sprinkler Fitters Local 281 U.A.
- Automobile Mechanics Local 701
- Joint Council 25 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (representing 25 local union affiliates)
- International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 399
- International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Locals 134 and 9
- Chicago Journey Plumbers Local 130
